Fox Television Serbia

ENPS plays a key role in the newsgathering process at Fox Television in Serbia, a medium-sized broadcaster producing hourly headline updates and a nightly news bulletin. At Fox, ENPS integrates with Grass Valley’s Aurora system and other production systems to provide a seamless and all-encompassing workflow.

Editorial decision-making

When the editorial team plans the day’s coverage, the assignment editor enters all decisions on stories, staff, and resources into the ENPS planning grid. This information is then instantly available to all newsroom staff. Other inputs include both bulletin and story timings; producers, reporters and crew assigned to each story; and budget considerations.

Search the ENPS database

Before deploying to cover a story, producers and reporters search the ENPS database for news wire stories to provide background or context; existing archive material that can be referenced for file footage; and contacts/interviewees who may specialize in the story’s subject matter. They can also check the required duration of the story and the crew they will be working with.

Out on location

Also available on mobiles and PDAs, producers and crew in the field have instant access to the main database and any logistical updates.

Post-production and scriptwriting

Back from the field, the producer or reporter enters the script in ENPS, complete with sound-bites and voice-over elements. ENPS automatically calculates the duration of the story based on the number of words in the script so the producer can time to the exact duration required. Meanwhile, the pictures are edited on GVG Aurora. Once complete, the finished edit can be
previewed and approved directly off the Aurora system via the ENPS interface.

Story placeholding

Users can then see which stories are ready to air and which are pending, and establish a play-off order or rundown for the bulletin. They can also write anchor lead-ins; mark cue-points and type in relevant text for graphics/captions; as well as time the total duration of the bulletin down to the second.

Control room preparation

In the control room or gallery, ENPS becomes the glue that holds the technical side of the bulletin together. The studio director relies on the ENPS interface to inform all control room personnel on camera switching, captioning, lead-in script; and the story rundown.

On-air support

News anchors have an ENPS monitor positioned offcamera so that they can stay one step ahead of the presentation. ENPS links their lead-in scripts to the prompter system so that any last-minute changes can be made instantly, ensuring a seamless bulletin for the television audience.
